Siaya Senator and ODM leader Oburu Oginga has dismissed reports that he is seriously ill, saying he only made a brief hospital visit for a general medical check-up. In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, Oburu said he was in good health and had already returned home after seeing his doctors.

“Thank you for your concerns. I have read the nation’s digital news and wish to state that I am very well,” he said.

The clarification followed reports and online speculation about his health after news emerged that he had visited hospital. Oburu said the visit was for a general check-up and should not be interpreted as confirmation that he was suffering from a serious illness.

“I had only briefly visited the hospital for a general check-up with my doctors and have since returned home,” he added.

The senator did not disclose the hospital he visited or provide details of the medical examinations conducted. Oburu also sought to reassure Kenyans that there was no need for alarm over his hospital visit.

“Being sick is a normal human experience and should not alarm anyone,” he said, adding that he would inform the public himself if he were to become seriously ill. “The day I am truly sick, I will inform you all, for I am a very transparent person,” he said.

His statement provides the senator’s own account of his condition and contradicts reports suggesting that he had been admitted to hospital for a serious illness. The reports had generated public concern, particularly because of Oburu’s prominent position as the ODM party leader and Siaya Senator.  While confirming that he had seen his doctors, Oburu did not disclose the nature of the check-up or whether any follow-up treatment had been recommended. Based on his statement, there is currently no confirmation from him that he is undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition.

The senator’s clarification also comes after previous instances in which speculation about his health circulated online. In May 2026, he similarly reassured the public that he was well after a period away from public engagements. For now, Oburu says he has returned home and is well, urging the public to rely on information from him rather than unverified reports about his health.
