Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata on Sunday made a notable appearance at a Linda Mwananchi movement rally held in Thika, Kiambu County, marking a new chapter in his political journey.

His attendance comes weeks after he publicly declared that he would not defend his gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) banner in the next election. At the time, Kang’ata attributed the decision to differences over governance approaches, public participation, and policy direction.

The governor’s presence at the Thika event has attracted considerable political attention due to his longstanding ties with President William Ruto and his influential positions within the ruling party over the years.

When announcing his departure from UDA on May 3, 2026, Kang’ata stressed that the move was not driven by personal disagreements but by contrasting perspectives on leadership and the management of public affairs.

“I express my sincere gratitude for the long and meaningful relationship I have had with His Excellency the President. Our association stretches back to 2013 when I first served as Member of Parliament for Kiharu,” he said at the time. “Over the years, as MP, senator, and now governor, we have worked closely in advancing shared goals for our people.”

The governor further argued that effective leadership should be guided by consultation, consensus-building, and respect for differing opinions rather than intimidation. He also cautioned that increasing political hostility could pose a threat to democratic principles and national unity.
