Instagram’s short videos “reels” will now be available for download.

The new feature will enable users to share clips across other apps like WhatsApp, a similar feature that boosted Tiktok’s popularity.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Instagram’s chief Adam Mosseri. He said the platform was rolling out the feature beginning in the United States.

However, downloadable reels will only apply to the content shared by public accounts.

“In the US, we’re rolling out the ability to download reels shared by public accounts to your camera roll,”Mosseri said “Worth mentioning, reels shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded.”

How to download

To download a reel, one needs to tap the share icon on a reel they enjoy and select download.

Public accounts will also be able to turn off the ability for people to download their reels in Account settings.

Before the new feature, Instagram only allowed users to download their own reels without a watermark from drafts.

Due to the introduction of reels in August 2020, the feature boosted the company’s revenue growth by 24%.
