The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has stated that voter registers are can now be accessed by Kenyans at a fee.
“The register was a big issue but we have been sharing it out with all the candidates and political parties. It is available for those who need it…at a small fee. There is a nominal fee. All presidential candidates, other candidates have bought the register for election units they are contesting,” he said.
This comes after lobby groups took to court and petitioned against the use of digital voter registers , whichj they urgue are prone to failure.
IEBC commissioner Abdi Guliye argued that digital voter registers will be used as KEIMS kits have already ben deployed in most polling centres. However incase any electronic failure or the digital voter register fails to identify a voter,a manual register will be used.
“Electronic voter identification is what will be used during the voting day and it involves the use of biometric and/or alphanumeric details to identify them and determine whether they are registered so that they can be allowed to vote,” said Guliye.
