Experts Say AI Poses ‘Extinction’ Risk

Industry chiefs and experts have warned, Global leaders should be working to reduce “the risk of extinction’ from artificial intelligence technology.

A statement signed by dozes of specialists , including Sam Altman whose company OpenAI created the ChatGPT bot said addressing the risks  from AI should be “a global priority alongside other societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

ChatGPT shown into the spotlight late last year, the AI having an ability to generate essays, poems and conversations from the briefest of prompts-having billion of dollars of investment into the field.

However, critics and insiders have raised the alarm over everything from biased algorithms to the possibility of huge hob losses as AI-powered automations keep on been developed.

AI Safety

In the latest statement, housed on the website of US-based non-profit Center for AI Safety, gave on detail of the potential existential threat posed by AI.

Several of the endorsers, including Geoffrey Hinton, who created some of the AI systems, have made similar warnings in the past.

The experts, biggest worry has been the idea of so-called Artificial General Intelligence(AGI)-a loosely defined concept for a moment when machines become capable of performing wide-ranging functions  can develop their own programming.

‘All movies created about AI’s show AI’s been able to develop their own programming’s and taking all control’, he experts have warned that AI’s could have disastrous consequences for the species.

Specialists and Academics from major companies including Google and Microsoft signed the latest letter, which comes two months after other companies called for a pause in the development of AI’s until it could be shown to be safe.
