Egypt has accused match officials of making decisive errors in its 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, with head coach Hossam Hassan claiming controversial refereeing decisions denied the Pharaohs a place in the quarter-finals.
The complaints emerged after Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback from two goals down to eliminate Egypt and advance to the last eight. While the result keeps the defending champions on course to retain the World Cup, Egypt maintains that two key officiating decisions significantly influenced the outcome of the match.
Hassan’s criticism focused on a goal scored by Mostafa Zico that was disallowed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review and a late penalty appeal after Hamdy Fathy went down inside Argentina’s penalty area. Egypt argued the goal should have stood and that the referee should have awarded, or at least reviewed, the penalty appeal before play continued.
Argentina scored the winning goal moments later when Enzo Fernández headed home Lautaro Martínez’s cross in stoppage time, completing a remarkable turnaround after trailing 2-0.
“We have been cheated unfairly today; we have suffered injustice,” Hassan told reporters after the match, according to Reuters.
The Egypt coach also questioned whether crucial refereeing decisions had favoured the defending champions, arguing that his players had been denied a fair opportunity to reach the quarter-finals despite producing one of their strongest performances of the tournament.

The controversial decisions quickly became one of the main talking points following the match, with football analysts and supporters debating both the VAR intervention that ruled out Egypt’s goal and the rejected penalty appeal. While many observers believed Egypt had legitimate grounds for frustration, others pointed to Argentina’s resilience and clinical finishing in the closing stages as the decisive factor.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged the difficulty of the contest and credited his team’s character after recovering from a two-goal deficit.
“This team never stops believing. Even when we were two goals down, the players kept fighting and trusted that the opportunities would come,” Scaloni said, according to Reuters.
Scaloni also praised Egypt’s performance, describing the African side as disciplined and well organised throughout much of the match.
The defeat ended one of Egypt’s most memorable FIFA World Cup campaigns. After progressing from a competitive group and advancing through the knockout stage, the Pharaohs came within minutes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time before conceding three unanswered goals late in the match.
As debate over the officiating continues, FIFA has not publicly indicated that the referee or the VAR team made incorrect decisions during the match. The governing body has also not announced any disciplinary or review process concerning the officials involved.
Under FIFA’s refereeing procedures, post-match assessments of officials are conducted routinely, but decisions made during a match remain valid unless the competition’s governing bodies determine there has been a procedural breach. As of publication, no official finding has concluded that the match was improperly officiated or manipulated.
