Five people were killed on Sunday night, September 13, after an Easy Coach bus collided with a Toyota IST at Kikopey along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. The crash occurred at about 11pm as the bus was travelling from Gilgil towards Nakuru, according to police and reports from Kenyan media. Several other people were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio confirmed the accident and said police had launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision. Four of the victims were occupants of the Toyota IST. They included two adult women and two juveniles, all of whom died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Toyota IST sustained serious injuries and was taken to Gilgil Hospital for treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention, bringing the death toll to five. Other passengers injured in the collision were also taken to hospital, although authorities had not provided a complete breakdown of their number or the severity of their injuries at the time of reporting.

Police have not yet issued a final explanation for what caused the collision. Some reports have described the crash as a head-on collision, while preliminary accounts cited by other media suggested the bus may have entered the path of the Toyota IST. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the movement of both vehicles before determining the cause of the crash.

The latest accident adds to a series of serious crashes reported around the Kikopey section of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. In January 2026, five people were killed in a collision involving a matatu and a truck at Kikopey. In September 2025, 16 people died in a separate crash near Kariandusi, close to Kikopey, after a matatu collided with a trailer. The repeated crashes have renewed attention on road safety along the busy highway, although the causes of individual accidents differ and must be established through investigations. For now, police investigations into the September 13 collision are ongoing as injured victims continue receiving treatment and families await further information about the deceased.
