Argentina came from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash on Tuesday, with Enzo Fernández scoring a stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into the quarter-finals after an extraordinary late comeback.

The victory keeps Argentina’s bid to retain the World Cup alive and sets up a quarter-final meeting with Switzerland, while Egypt’s historic tournament run came to an agonising end after leading for much of the contest.

Egypt made a confident start and stunned the reigning champions in the 15th minute when defender Yasser Ibrahim headed home from a well-delivered corner to give the African side a deserved lead. Argentina had an opportunity to respond before halftime after being awarded a penalty, but captain Lionel Messi was denied by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, whose save capped an outstanding first-half display.

The Pharaohs strengthened their position in the 62nd minute when Mostafa Zico finished off a swift attacking move to double the advantage, leaving Argentina facing a shock elimination with less than half an hour remaining.

However, Lionel Scaloni’s side mounted a determined response as defender Cristian Romero reduced the deficit in the 79th minute before Messi redeemed his earlier miss by calmly finding the equaliser four minutes later.

With extra time only moments away, Lautaro Martínez delivered a cross into the penalty area and Enzo Fernández rose to head home the decisive goal in stoppage time, completing one of the tournament’s most remarkable comebacks.

“This team never stops believing,” Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni said after the match, according to Reuters. “Even when we were two goals down, the players trusted that the opportunities would come.”

Scaloni also praised Egypt’s performance, acknowledging the challenge posed by the African side.

“Egypt made things very difficult for us. They defended well, attacked with confidence and showed why they deserved to be in the knockout stage,” he said.

For Egypt, the result marked a painful end to what had been one of the country’s most impressive FIFA World Cup campaigns. The Pharaohs had looked on course to reach the quarter-finals for the first time before Argentina’s late resurgence changed the outcome.

Speaking after the match, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan questioned several refereeing decisions and expressed disappointment at the result.

“We suffered an unjust defeat,” Hassan said, according to Middle East Monitor, arguing that key decisions had influenced the outcome of the match.

Despite the disappointment, Hassan praised his players’ commitment throughout the tournament, saying they had shown resilience and determination against one of the world’s strongest teams.

Argentina’s victory was driven by experience at key moments. Although Messi missed from the penalty spot, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner responded with a crucial equaliser and played a central role in inspiring his side’s comeback. Fernández’s winning goal completed a turnaround that underlined Argentina’s ability to respond under pressure.

For Egypt, goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir emerged as one of the standout performers despite the defeat. His penalty save from Messi and several other important interventions kept his side in control for much of the match before Argentina’s late pressure proved decisive.

The result sends Argentina into the last eight, where they will face Switzerland after the Europeans advanced by defeating Colombia in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.

Egypt leave the tournament with their reputation enhanced despite the defeat. The Pharaohs progressed from a competitive group before eliminating Australia in the Round of 32 and came within minutes of producing one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Argentina celebrated another step towards defending their world title, the match served as a reminder that every knockout fixture demands consistency from the opening whistle to the final moments. Against Switzerland in the quarter-finals, Scaloni’s side will be expected to address the defensive lapses that nearly ended their campaign before another remarkable comeback kept their World Cup hopes alive.
