Twitters New Competitor Meta Launches New App “Threads”

Post by : Hillary Musyoki

Twitters faces a new challenge as Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg launches a new app similar to Twitter ‘threads’.

“Lets do this. Welcome to Threads” Mark wrote his first post on the app, along with a fire emoji. He announced that over 5million users have signed up since its launch.

The app ‘Threads’ features short text posts that users can like, re-post and reply to. However the app does not include any direct message capabilities. A user can post up to 500 characters long, include links, photos and videos up to five minutes long, according to a Meta blog post.

The blog post also said that ‘Thread’ is available in more than 100 countries on both Apple’s App Store and Google’s play Store.

Threads has been launched as a standalone app, its users can log in using their Instagram credentials and follow the same account, making it an easy addition to existing habits for Instagram’s more than 2 billion monthly active users.

“Investors can’t help but be a little excited about the prospect that Meta really ha s a “Twitter-Killer’, said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis .

The new app comes after both CEO’s Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk traded words for months and even threatened to fight each other in a real-life mixed martial arts cage match in Las Vegas.

Meta timing is great, as its rival Twitter faces many challenges.

Twitter Bought

Elon Musk bought Twitter for$44B in October, 2022, but since that, Twitters value decreased as if faced an exodus of advertisers, a mind staff cutting and content moderation controversies. With its latest move limiting the number of tweets users can read per day.

Meta’s CEO, in Threads post, addresses those challenges. ‘I think there should be a public conversation app with 1 billion +people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will,” he wrote.

Several brands like Billboard, HBO,NPR and Netflix had their accounts set up within minutes of the launch, with celebrities such as Shakira and other well-known personalities.

According to Reuters review, the app did not appear to show any ads.

To built up Threads, Meta has been making introductions to social media influencers to attract them to the new app and encouraging them to pot at least twice a day, said Ryan Detert CEO of influencer marketing company.

The app benefits from the failure of other Twitter competitors to take advantage of the service’s stumbles.

Meta now needs to only convince a quarter  of Instagram’s users to join Threads in order to rival Twitter’s size.
