Sugar Scandal! Mastermind Arrested To Be Arraigned Today

As, the search for the condemned sugar continues, a suspected mastermind has been arrested and is set to be arraigned in court today.

The mastermind, Chirpus Waithaka was arrested as he arrived to Kenya from Dubai at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, despite the fact tat he had secured an anticipatory bail of Ksh.100,000.

Chirpus Waithaka joins other five traders from Kajiado, Nairobi and Mombasa who face same charges , theft and distribution of the condemned sugar.

The suspect, believed to be the mastermind behind the sugar theft, was arrested by DCI officers as soon as he got off from the plane. In what seemed to be a well planned move, Chirpus had a copy of an interim order for anticipatory bail of Ksh.100,000 granted by the high court in Mombasa.

Chirpus and the five trader who face the same charges will appear before the court today.

Traders Arrested

Samwel Kimani Njuguna , of SamWest distributors , Kawangware, is among the traders arrested in the course of last week, for handling the condemned consignment of sugar.

In his statement to the police, Mr. Kimani revealed that he brought in 1,640 bags of the contaminated sugar in three trailers to is distribution depot in Kawangware, however police believe that the quantity of sugar that passed through the depot is much higher that what he states.

The store is under police watch, as DCI drove away the trucks believed to have transported the contaminated sugar.

As the investigations continued , two other traders were nabbed one from Eastleigh area in Nairobi and the other from Kitengela , Kajiado as some of the outlets for the condemned sugar were on Kenyan shops.

20,000, 50kgs bags of sugar, were deemed to be unfit for human consumption in 2018 and were marked for conversion into industrial ethanol, in a process supervised by the Kenya Bureau of Statistics and the National Environmental Management Authority.

As a result, 27 government employees were suspended, wit the president promising serious action to be taken to those found guilty despite their status in government.
