Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has challenged the University of Eldoret (UoE) to reveal the action it took against a part-time lecturer following remarks allegedly made during a class on September 24. Alai demands that the University confirm whether an investigation has been initiated against him, whether an interim measure has been imposed or disciplinary action taken against the person. He argues that the allegations must be taken seriously while the lecturer is accorded a fair process before a conclusion is reached.

“The allegations must be taken seriously. Students and staff deserve safety and dignity. The lecturer also deserves a fair, impartial process before any finding of misconduct or punishment,” Alai said.

The controversial remarks were reportedly made during a SHUM 211: State and Society Development class at UoE. The University has announced that it strongly condemns the objectionable comments and clarifies that they do not represent the position or official views of the institution.

“The University wishes to state unequivocally that these remarks do not represent, reflect, or in any way constitute the position, policy, or official views of the University of Eldoret,” the institution said.

In addition, the institution revealed that it had taken “immediate and appropriate disciplinary action” against the person in line with its policies and due-process requirements.

However, Alai criticized the formulation of UoE’s statement condemning the remarks made by the part-time lecturer. Specifically, he objected to the use of “reportedly made” and “attributed” in describing the allegations while announcing disciplinary action. He demanded an explanation as to what exactly the process had been at the time of the statement. In his message, Alai further urged the preservation of and verifying digital material pertinent to the case before any conclusion is reached. He argued that the recordings, screenshots, and transcripts ought to be examined. Witnesses interviewed to establish the authenticity and context of the videos, including the motivation of the party responsible for posting them online. The accused should also be given a chance to present his version of the events.

The controversy erupted after a video circulated with the lecturer allegedly making political observations about President William Ruto and the 2027 election, including advising students from certain regions to consider local universities if Ruto lost. The university has not made public the identity of the lecturer and the nature of the disciplinary action taken against him. Alai has asked UoE to give a written account of the process and safeguards within seven days of receiving the request.
