The 2026 Kenya Music Festival reached its climax on Friday with the State Concert at Bungoma State Lodge, bringing together some of the country’s best student performers to celebrate artistic excellence, cultural diversity and the role of the creative arts in education.

The State Concert, regarded as the highlight of the annual festival, features award-winning performances selected from the national competitions held over the past two weeks at Kibabii University. President William Ruto is presiding over the event, which has drawn senior government officials, education stakeholders, teachers, adjudicators and invited guests.

The performances showcase a broad range of artistic disciplines, including traditional folk music, choral performances, instrumental music, solo and ensemble presentations, cultural dances, spoken word and original compositions. The concert serves as a platform to recognise outstanding talent while reflecting Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage through music and performance.

This year’s festival, the 98th Kenya Music Festival, has been hosted in Bungoma County since August 1 under the theme, “Enhancing the Creative Economy Through Knowledge, Skills and Artistic Production for Sustainable Development.” According to organisers, the event has brought together about 143,000 learners from pre-primary schools, primary schools, junior and senior secondary schools, teacher training colleges, technical institutions and universities across the country.

Organised by the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Music Festival remains one of the country’s largest co-curricular programmes, providing learners with an opportunity to develop and showcase their creative abilities while promoting cultural exchange, innovation and national cohesion. Throughout the festival, participants competed in various categories covering music, dance, elocution and creative performances before adjudicators selected the best entries for the State Concert.

Beyond the performances, the festival has also delivered a significant economic boost to Bungoma County. The influx of learners, teachers, officials and visitors has increased demand for accommodation, transport, food services and retail businesses, with local traders reporting heightened activity during the two-week event.

The State Concert has traditionally marked the official conclusion of the national festival, offering top performers an opportunity to present their award-winning pieces before the Head of State and other invited dignitaries. It also serves as a national recognition of artistic achievement and highlights the contribution of music and the performing arts to education and cultural preservation.

Government officials have consistently described the creative economy as an important contributor to Kenya’s development agenda, with the annual music festival viewed as a key platform for identifying, nurturing and promoting young artistic talent. This year’s theme places particular emphasis on equipping learners with knowledge, skills and creativity that can contribute to sustainable economic growth through the arts.

As the curtains fall on the 2026 festival, attention will turn to implementing lessons from this year’s competitions and preparing for the next edition, while participants return to their institutions after showcasing the depth of Kenya’s musical talent and cultural traditions on the national stage.
