Lawyer and former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has recommended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the United Opposition’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election and proposed either Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata or Nyandarua Senator John Methu as the vice president.
“This, for me, is the working formula for change of Government. Let Edwin Sifuna run for President and be deputized by Irungu Kangata or John Methu,” Havi said in a statement on X on Friday, November 6, 2026.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Attorney-General Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa and other presidential aspirants in the opposition should run for Senate seats in their various counties. They will work towards mobilising support for Sifuna’s presidential bid, Havi said.
He also proposed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to lead the presidential campaign.
“H.E Rigathi Gachagua and H.E Kalonzo Musyoka should be ‘supreme leaders’ in charge of the presidential campaign and the Government to be formed,” he said.
This remains Havi’s personal recommendation.
The lawyer’s recommendation comes days after Kang’ata said he had no interest in being Deputy President and said he wanted to focus on policy and development. In an interview on Wednesday, November 4, the Murang’a Governor said he wanted to discuss his ideas on Kenya’s future with Gachagua, Kalonzo and Sifuna.
“I do not want to become a DP for several reasons: I believe strongly the issue is not about positions; it is about platform. What do you want to do for the country?” he said.
Kang’ata said he wanted to focus on his duties in Murang’a county.

Sifuna has previously said he would consider a presidential bid if Kenyans supported him. But he said any decision would be made collectively. “If the people feel that this is the best way for us to proceed, we will not say no. We will proceed with the people,” he told Citizen TV’s The Explainer in July 2026. The Linda Mwananchi movement is trying to build up a national support base and will decide on their political direction.
Kalonzo has warned against an early announcement that Sifuna would be the opposition’s presidential candidate. He said whoever leads the coalition should be decided through consultations.
“Any leader who wants to come on board should come on board after we have our conference on the 13th of November,” he told those at the unveiling of Linda Mwananchi’s headquarters on October 30.
Gachagua has previously said he would support Sifuna if there was a consensus among opposition leaders.
Havi’s recommendation provides another possible recipe for the 2027 succession talks within the opposition. Sifuna has not officially announced his candidacy and neither has Kang’ata or Methu been confirmed as vice-presidential candidates by the political alliance.
