Chelsea FC have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior just three months into his tenure, following a string of disappointing performances that have derailed the club’s season.
The 41-year-old leaves the role after overseeing a five-game losing streak in the Premier League, capped by a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. The run has seen Chelsea slide to seventh place, drifting further from Champions League contention and putting their hopes of European qualification at serious risk.
Rosenior, who took over from Enzo Maresca earlier in the season, had openly criticized his squad following the Brighton loss,“The performance was unacceptable and indefensible.”
In an official statement, the club confirmed the decision, acknowledging the difficulty of the move while pointing to underwhelming results.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Chelsea also expressed appreciation for Rosenior’s conduct during his short stint,“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism.”
The club’s struggles under his leadership were historic in nature, with the team failing to score in five consecutive league matches for the first time in over a century, and recording their longest losing streak since 1993.
First-team coach Calum McFarlane has been appointed interim head coach for the remainder of the campaign. His immediate task will be preparing the squad for a crucial FA Cup semi-final clash against Leeds United.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Chelsea have begun exploring long-term options, with Andoni Iraola among the names linked to the role as the club looks to stabilise its managerial position ahead of next season.
