Micheal Joseph opens up on why he resigned as safaricom board chairperson.
According to Wikipedia Michael Joseph is currently Chairman of Kenya Airways a position he has held since October 2016 and also chaired the Safaricom PLC board having been appointed in August 2020. He was previously the CEO of Safaricom from July 2000 to November 2010, as Founder CEO and then again as acting CEO from July 2019 to March 2020.
He explains he is not stepping out of the business sector ,only wants to focus on the new safaricom Ethiopia business and Kenya Airways where he is the board chairman.
“I want to devote more time to supporting Safaricom’s investment in Ethiopia and relinquishing the role of Chairman allows me the flexibility and freedom to undertake this important role on behalf of Safaricom. This will also allow me to devote more time to Kenya Airways during this critical time to ensure that we continue the work of restructuring and refinancing for KQ to remain on the journey towards profitability in the next 2 years,” he added.
He also states that he widely consulted before making the decision with their main shareholders such as the Goverment of kenya Kenya, Vodacom and Vodafone and the CEO safaricom ,Peter Ndegwa.
He will still reamain the director of the board , if the stated conditions in the approved application are met.Joseph’s position will be taken over by John Ngumi.
