Winnie Odinga has declared her intention to run for the Nairobi County Senator in the 2027 General Election, motivated partly by the political maneuverings around current Senator Edwin Sifuna. Speaking during the first death anniversary commemoration of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, Winnie confirmed that her decision was directly motivated by current Senator Edwin Sifuna‘s ambitions for higher national executive office.

Her declaration has set the stage for a potentially high-profile showdown in Kenya’s political landscape as the Nairobi County Senator Vacancy heats up in the build-up to the 2027 General Elections. Winnie Odinga is a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly and the youngest daughter of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Senator Edwin Sifuna, who represents Nairobi in the Senate, is considering challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.

In the meantime, he has attracted considerable visibility as a key figurehead of the Equitable Party, which is rallying supporters in the wake of the polls. Sifuna has made it clear that he is considering running for a bigger position, and Winnie Odinga has since declared her candidacy in the Nairobi County Senate election.

Sifuna has often professed allegiance to the Orange Democratic Movement, despite a range of issues within the party and criticism of his political views.

Winnie’s news comes as politicians and political parties gear up for the 2027 General Elections in Kenya. While she has staked her claim for the Nairobi County Senator ticket, she did not provide many specifics about her vision and agenda for the people of Nairobi.

The senator represents the people of Nairobi in the Senate, where he or she debates and passes laws relating to counties and oversees national resources to support county governments.

Winnie’s candidacy will be a game-changer in the race for the Nairobi County Senator ticket, but she will face stiff competition from prominent Nairobi politicians as well as political parties. Her chances of winning will depend on a combination of factors, including the type of political party she will get, any endorsements she can secure, and the extent to which she can garner public support from voters in Nairobi.

Her announcement marks an important milestone in her political career as she prepares to enter the political arena in Kenya.
