Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen is set to arrive in Kenya next year, with the planned State Visit to be included in talks regarding enhanced diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
The visit was discussed at a meeting on Tuesday, October 13, between Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Austria’s envoy to Kenya Simone Knapp at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
In a post-meeting update, Mudavadi revealed that the meeting agenda included the proposed State Visit and Austria’s reinvigorated Africa focus.
“Our discussions centred on the proposed State Visit to Kenya by Austrian President H.E. Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen in 2027, and Austria’s renewed strategic focus on Africa,” Mudavadi wrote in the update.
The Cabinet Secretary noted that Kenya was building key partnerships to drive investments and broaden economic opportunities while emerging as a gateway to the region.
“This presents an opportunity to deepen economic cooperation, attract investments and open new frontiers for Kenyan businesses and young talents, as Kenya emerges as Austria’s strategic partner in the region,” he added.

The proposed State Visit comes as Nairobi seeks to boost economic engagement with European partners, including through expanded trade and collaboration in skills development. Kenya and Austria have in the past engaged on collaboration in employment, education, and investment.
On July 2026, Mudavadi announced a labour and migration agreement to facilitate recruitment in the healthcare sector of Kenyan experts in Austria. The countries have also identified opportunities for collaboration in research and academic exchange. Van der Bellen’s planned visit to Kenya next year could provide an opportunity for the leaders of the two countries to discuss and formalize further areas of collaboration.
However, his intention has yet to be officially announced, and details of the proposed State Visit were not revealed.
