Egerton University has launched a parents’ portal designed to give parents and guardians direct access to information about their children’s academic progress and class attendance. The new platform is intended to strengthen communication between the university and parents by allowing them to monitor key aspects of their children’s academic life without having to rely solely on information provided by the students.

Through the portal, parents can access updates on academic performance and class attendance, giving them a clearer picture of whether their children are regularly attending classes and keeping up with their studies. The initiative provides parents with an additional way of following their children’s progress while at the university, particularly as students transition to a learning environment where they are expected to take greater responsibility for their academic work.

The system could also allow parents to identify potential academic or attendance concerns earlier and engage with their children or the university where necessary. The launch comes as universities increasingly adopt digital platforms to improve access to academic information and communication with students and their families. For parents, the portal provides a more direct means of staying informed about their children’s university experience, while for the institution, it creates an additional communication channel between the university and families.

However, access to students’ academic information also raises questions around privacy and consent, particularly because university students are adults in most cases. The university will therefore need to ensure that the system operates within applicable data-protection and institutional policies governing the sharing of student information. The portal is expected to complement, rather than replace, existing communication channels between Egerton University, students and parents.

The move places Egerton among Kenyan institutions exploring digital solutions to improve academic monitoring and strengthen engagement with parents and guardians.
