The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced the death of its Assistant Director for Surveillance and Enforcement, Silas Cheboi, describing his passing as a profound loss to the authority, his colleagues and the wider energy sector.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, EPRA said Cheboi served the authority with dedication, professionalism, integrity and an unwavering commitment to its regulatory mandate throughout his career. The regulator said he would be remembered for his distinguished public service and the impact he made while carrying out his duties.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Silas Cheboi, Assistant Director, Surveillance and Enforcement at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA),” the authority said in its statement.

EPRA added that Cheboi’s death was “a profound loss to the Authority, his colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of working with him,” while extending its condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone mourning his passing.

The authority also confirmed that Cheboi’s body will be laid to rest at his home in Solian, Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, on Saturday, August 15, 2026. No further details regarding the cause or circumstances of his death were disclosed.

As Assistant Director for Surveillance and Enforcement, Cheboi was part of the senior management team responsible for supporting EPRA’s enforcement of Kenya’s energy and petroleum regulations. The directorate oversees surveillance activities and compliance efforts aimed at ensuring licensed operators adhere to legal and safety requirements across the country’s energy sector.

EPRA is the national regulator established under the Energy Act to oversee the electricity, petroleum and renewable energy sectors. Its mandate includes licensing, market oversight, consumer protection and enforcement of regulatory standards designed to promote safety, fairness and compliance within the industry.

The authority did not announce an immediate replacement for Cheboi or provide additional information about his tenure. Instead, it focused its statement on honouring his contribution to the institution, describing him as a dedicated professional whose service reflected the values of integrity and commitment to public duty.
