The Independent and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati has hinted that there might be a possibility the Mombasa Gubernatorial election will be postponed.
This comes after the former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, who is also eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial seat. Filled an appeal to the East African Court of Justice(EACJ) as he was not satisfied with the supreme court’s decision, concerning his impeachment.
“If the decisions of the court are going to throw us completely out of balance then we shall postpone elections for those selective posts only. We are guided by judgements of the court and we are law-abiding but again when it becomes impossible for us to perform our function then we shall postpone elections for the respective positions,” Chebukati said referring to Mike Sonko
IEBC revoked Sonko’s candidature to vie for the Mombasa governor seat, after the court had ruled out a judgement that the impeachment was constitutional and fair. A letter from Swalleh Yusuf, Mombasa county returning officer, directed to Sonko indicated that the court decision made by the court unqualified him unfit to hold any public office
‘’In adherence to the supreme court judgement you are therefore disqualified from holding any public office and thus disqualified from contesting and being elected as the governor of Mombasa or any other county. Your candidature is invalidated and your certificate revoked,’’ Yusuf said
