Five people have died and another sustained serious injuries following a head-on collision involving two lorries along the Marsabit–Isiolo Road, police have confirmed.

The crash occurred on the busy A2 highway, a key transport corridor linking northern Kenya with the rest of the country. Preliminary reports indicate that the two commercial vehicles collided head-on, leaving five occupants dead at the scene.

One survivor sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The person’s condition had not been disclosed at the time of publication.

Police officers, emergency responders and members of the public responded to the scene to rescue the injured, recover the bodies and clear the wreckage from the roadway. Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted as recovery operations and preliminary investigations got underway.

Authorities had not released the identities of the deceased, pending formal identification and notification of their next of kin.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Traffic investigators are expected to examine several factors, including the movements of the two vehicles before the crash, possible mechanical defects, road conditions and whether any traffic regulations were breached.

The Marsabit–Isiolo Road serves as one of Kenya’s principal transport routes to the northern region and the Ethiopia border. The highway carries a high volume of heavy commercial vehicles transporting cargo, making it a critical link for regional trade and passenger movement.

Road safety experts have consistently identified collisions involving heavy trucks as a significant contributor to fatal crashes on major highways, underscoring the importance of adherence to traffic regulations, proper vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices.

Police are expected to issue a comprehensive report once investigations are completed and additional information becomes available.

The latest crash adds to the number of fatal road accidents recorded on Kenya’s highways in recent months, as authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and comply with road safety regulations, particularly on long-distance routes used by heavy commercial vehicles.
