President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating key development projects in Turkana County, saying strategic investments in infrastructure, housing and water will help unlock the region’s natural resources and spur economic growth.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, through his official X account after holding a consultative meeting with Members of Parliament from Turkana County at State House, Nairobi.

According to Ruto, the discussions focused on reviewing the county’s development priorities and identifying ways to speed up ongoing government projects aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities.

“Turkana County is endowed with vast natural resources and immense economic potential that must be fully harnessed for the residents and, indeed, the entire country,” the President said.

Among the projects earmarked for accelerated implementation are affordable housing units, student hostels, modern markets, fishing infrastructure, road construction and water supply programmes.

Ruto said the projects are expected to stimulate local economic activity, improve access to essential public services and create employment opportunities for residents.

“We have agreed with the leaders from the county to accelerate the completion of ongoing development projects, including affordable housing, student hostels, modern markets, fishing infrastructure, and road and water development,” he stated.

The President also underscored the importance of peace and security in achieving sustainable development in the county, noting that long-term investments depend on a stable environment.

“Security, peace and cohesion remain critical enablers in unlocking Turkana’s full potential and creating opportunities for its people,” he added.

Turkana County has significant deposits of natural resources, including oil, while its location along Kenya’s borders with Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia gives it strategic economic importance. However, the region has for years faced security challenges arising from cross-border conflicts and livestock raids involving neighbouring communities.

Successive governments have identified improved security as a key requirement for attracting investment, supporting infrastructure development and expanding economic activities in the county.

The meeting at State House forms part of the national government’s ongoing consultations with county leaders on implementing development programmes and addressing regional priorities. The discussions also come as the administration continues to roll out flagship projects under its broader economic transformation agenda.

While no specific completion timelines were announced, the President said the government would work closely with local leaders to ensure the identified projects are implemented more quickly and deliver tangible benefits to Turkana residents.
