Harambee Stars goalkeeper Brian Bwire has completed a move to South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Chippa United, securing a fresh start in his club career after leaving fellow top-flight outfit Polokwane City.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper joins the Eastern Cape-based club as they rebuild their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, with Chippa United identifying him as a key addition following the departure of Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali, who served as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper before moving on earlier this year.

Bwire’s arrival is expected to strengthen Chippa United’s goalkeeping department after a challenging campaign in which the club conceded 44 league goals—one of the highest tallies in the PSL. The club is looking to reinforce its defensive unit as it seeks a more stable performance in the upcoming season.

The transfer also marks an important milestone for the Kenyan international, whose time at Polokwane City came to an early end after a reported contractual dispute limited his involvement during the latter part of the 2025/26 campaign. Despite the interruption to his club football, Bwire remained in contention for national team selection and continued to feature in Harambee Stars assignments.

Before moving to South Africa, Bwire established himself as one of Kenya’s promising goalkeepers through impressive performances for Kariobangi Sharks before joining Tusker FC, where he further enhanced his reputation with consistent displays in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League. His performances earned him regular call-ups to the national team and eventually attracted interest from clubs outside Kenya.

His switch to Polokwane City represented a significant step in his professional career, offering him an opportunity to compete in one of Africa’s most competitive domestic leagues. Although his first spell in South Africa did not unfold as expected, the move to Chippa United presents another opportunity to establish himself in the PSL and regain regular first-team football.

For Chippa United, Bwire’s signing comes at a crucial time following the exit of Stanley Nwabali, whose performances for both club and the Nigerian national team elevated his profile across the continent. Replacing an established goalkeeper is expected to be one of the club’s key tasks ahead of the new campaign, with Bwire now among the players expected to compete for the number one jersey.

The transfer also highlights the growing presence of Kenyan footballers in South Africa’s top division, a league that continues to attract players from across the continent due to its competitive standard and professional structure. Strong performances in the PSL have often provided players with greater visibility in continental competitions and international football.

For Bwire, regular playing time will be particularly important as Kenya continues preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Consistent performances at club level could strengthen his position within the Harambee Stars squad as competition for places intensifies.

His move to Chippa United therefore represents both a fresh opportunity for the goalkeeper and a strategic acquisition for the South African club as it seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season. With pre-season preparations set to begin, attention will now turn to whether Bwire can establish himself as Chippa United’s first-choice goalkeeper and build on the promise he has shown throughout his career in Kenya and South Africa.
