Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata on Sunday publicly aligned himself with the Linda Mwananchi movement during a political rally held in Thika, Kiambu County, in a move likely to fuel speculation about his future political direction. His appearance alongside opposition figures comes several weeks after he announced that he would not defend his seat on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the next general election. Kang’ata attributed the decision to disagreements over governance approaches, public participation, and policy direction.

The development is particularly notable considering Kang’ata’s long-standing political relationship with President William Ruto and his previous leadership roles within the ruling party. When announcing his exit from UDA on May 3, 2026, the governor maintained that his decision was based on principle rather than personal differences.

“I express my sincere gratitude for the long and meaningful relationship I have had with His Excellency the President. Our association stretches back to 2013 when I first served as Member of Parliament for Kiharu,” he said at the time. “Over the years, as MP, senator, and now governor, we have worked closely in advancing shared goals for our people.”

Kang’ata further argued that good leadership should be built on engagement and respect for differing opinions instead of forceful tactics.

“Leadership must be anchored in persuasion, not pressure; in dialogue, not coercion,” he said, warning that heightened political hostility could weaken democratic institutions.

At one point during the Thika rally, tension briefly flared after a group of youths attempted to move toward the main dais, causing a temporary disturbance. Despite the interruption, the leaders continued with their addresses, insisting that their nationwide mobilisation efforts would not be halted by threats or intimidation.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino moved quickly to reassure supporters and restore calm, stating that the event would proceed without disruption.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi used the platform to challenge critics who had questioned the opposition’s presence in the Mt Kenya region. He insisted that the Linda Mwananchi movement would continue taking its message across the country, regardless of political strongholds.

Siaya Governor James Orengo also addressed the gathering, expressing confidence that President Ruto would struggle to secure another term, arguing that public support for the administration had significantly declined.

The event further drew attention because of the presence of former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo, whose growing involvement with the Linda Mwananchi movement has attracted considerable interest from political observers. Ahead of the rally, Odhiambo confirmed her attendance through her official X account, encouraging supporters to participate and signaling her continued engagement with the movement.

Her appearance followed recent remarks by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who formally welcomed her into the initiative and described her as an important voice in efforts aimed at promoting constitutionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
