The Garbage Menace in Murang’a County as Kangata moves in

The county of Murang’a is struggling with garbage. The menace has affected Murang’a town major and also other major towns in the county have been majorly affected. According to the residents of the county the menace is not new as it started during the reign of Governor Mwangi wa Iria.

Murang’a County is among the most Populated  counties in the country. However, the country enjoyed a higher rural population before the onset of devolution. After devolution towns in the county started getting the feel of Rural -Urban migration. This migration has had both negative and positive feedback across the county.

One of the positive effects of the migration is that it has increased access to job opportunities and created new revenue streams for the county Government. This has also come with one major problem. The problem of Garbage. Traders in the Town of Murang’a are now threatening to boycott paying taxes and other levies until the situation is addressed.

According to Traders, garbage is covering the entrance to their business. this has affected their businesses as customers no longer want to come in. The garbage question in the county has been a thorn in the fresh of the residents.

Local Activist

A former Member of County of Assembly candidate for Township ward known as Wakili Ali Ali has been on the forefront fighting for the issue. The young politician has even organised youths and other residents in a clean up exercise. His efforts were however, criminalised by the former Governor.

The county through the Governor,Dr Kangata, is looking to sponsor a supplementary budget in the county assembly. The governor wants to use the money to buy new garbage trucks that will be used to collect the garbage. According to our sources, most of the residents feel that Wakili Ali Ali should be appointed to head the garbage division and ensure that all the towns in the county are clean.
