First time Legislator and Langata MP Jalango has commented about the green card lottery. Through a tweet the  new MP tweeted that over 30 million Kenyans had applied for the green card lottery. The green card lottery is a program that is sponsored by the United States Government. The American Government announces the annual lottery program where they pick 55,000 successful candidates from all over the world.

The program is aimed at offering world citizens a chance at the american dream. Kenyans have been eligible to apply to the for the program this year. This means that when the selection is being made a good number of Kenyans will succeed. However, Jalango noted that over half the population in the country applied for the few slots available. This means that most of the Kenyans in this country are not comfortable.

The legislator wondered why only a few Kenyans wanted to remain in the country while questioning the quality of life in Kenya. 30 million Kenyans have applied for the Green card lottery! Yaani only 20m of us want to live in Kenya! Is it that bad?” he asked.

Shocking Number

While the number quoted by Jalango is not an official figure, his Tweet attracted responses from Kenyans who explained why the US seemed alluring to many. Only a few Tweeps said they would opt to remain in Kenya instead of pursuing the American dream.

Below are some of the replies:

@fwelloh: “What are you saying? People want to unsubscribe from being Kenyan!”

@Veanay: “30 million?”

@musonyeh13: “Things are that bad. The economic situation is not allowing anyone to sing of loyalty anymore.”
