Uasin gishu two time governor Jackson Mandago has declared his interest to run for the uasingishu senate seat in the upcoming general election. The governor who is serving his second and last term in office has decided to go for the senate seat even though people consider that a downgrade.
Second time governors like mandago are facing it rough since the constitution does not allow governors two run for more than two consecutive terms. this law has indeed placed many second time governors at crossroads on what to do about their political future.
Some of this governors are declaring their bid to run for the highest seat in the land, with the likes of Mwangi wa iria of Murang’a , Alfred Mutua of Machakos, Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega, Amason Kingi of Kilifi just to mention afew. it is unclear whether this county bosses are declaring their interest for the presidential seat to gain favour with the most preffered candidate in an aim to form the next government.
With Mandago making his announcement he join’s his siaya counterpart Colonel Rasanga who had declared to run for a parliamentary seat as amember of parliament but is being desuaded from doing so by senator James orengo. Orengo urged the governor to focus on campaigning for raila Odinga in the next presidential campaigns and when they form the next government he shall be considered.
Mandago told off his critics in a previous press conference where he declared his bid saying that one does not need to be a lawyer or have pursued law to be in the senate. The governor even citied examples of Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka saying that he was once a District commissioner.
Governor mandago is considered as one of the closest allies of deputy president william Ruto and many people were expecting mandago to join ruto in his presidential campaigns.
