Kisumu Riots: Student Dies, Three People Injured

In the Juakali area of Kisumu town, a student was shot dead following a shootout by police officers on Tuesday.

According to witnesses present, traffic police officers opened fire at a public service vehicle(PSV) after engaging in a chase with the driver of the vehicle.

The student, a 19 year old , who was a bodada passenger ,was shot dead during the scuffle, with three other people including the rider of the bodaboda nursing a gunshot wound.

The angry mod had built up from the Juakali area after the traffic officers allegedly shot dead one woman following a disagreement between the officers and PSV driver.

The deceased, who has been identified as a student from Rangala Girls High School, was a passenger of a bodada and was headed towards the town Centre at the time of the incident.

Property of unknown value was destroyed by the mob , vandalized shops and tried to gain entry into the Kisumu Central police station.

Police officers used tear gas to disperse the crows, the Regional Traffic Commander revealing that two officers have already recorded statements.

Area leaders have condemned the incident, calling on IPOA to investigate the excessive use of force by police in Kisumu.

The body of the deceased was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinda morgue awaiting post-mortem.
