Post by : Hillary Musyoki

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that the government has selected a team of experts on power with he aim of reducing the cost of electricity.

According to the DP who was speaking at a media roundtable, the cost of electricity has been increased by the prolonged dry spell as well as climate change and is expected to worsen in the coming weeks.

“We are having a problem because of the prolonged drought and the five consecutively failed rainy season,” he said.

“In another two to three weeks, we will have very serious shortage.”

Additionally, he said independent power producers are unsustainable because the vast majority use diesel, making their power option highly option.

He also said that the government is now looking into alternative energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar energy.

“The government is well seized of this matter because the cost of power increases the cost of manufacturing, which in turn is then passed to the consumer.”

DP Gachagua said, there is a big team of experts on power who are pulling all nighters trying to bring the cost of power down.

He also said, there will be a policy announcement in the coming weeks that will reveal interventions put in place by the government to bring the cost of power down.
