Building That Developed Cracks Collapses In Ruiru

In Ruiru town, a five storey building collapsed a day after residents were ordered to evacuate it.

The building housed over 200 people . The collapse occurred in the early morning hours of Monday , November 21, 2022.

The occupants of the building were ordered to evacuate the building as it had developed cracks and as a result started sinking from one side.

Residents said that huge cracks appeared on the walls of the ground and second floors on Saturday , causing them to raise an alarm as people started to rushing out with their belongings.

Additionally, the residents said that the ill-fated house was initially a bar and the owners continued with construction even as the pub was operational.

One of the dwellers said, the structure shook and vibrated at night and in the morning , they woke up to see cracks in the columns and beams.

Kiambu governor who visited the site, said the building was visibly weak and had indications that its construction was poorly done.

He had said the building will remain closed for inspection , only to cave in later.

Furthermore, the area MCA Kimani Wa Nduta said the owner of the building should pay the tenants at least one month’s rent so that they can find alternative accommodation.

His colleague, John Kamende of Githothua Ward,  revealed that MCA’S  will summon the CEC in charge of planning to shed light to the increased collapse of house in the country.

Government Act

The Governor said he will meet , Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Cabinet Secretary for lands and housing Zacharia Mwangi Njeru today, to deliberate on the recurrent issues.

He has also insisted that his government has instituted measures to avert a further collapse of buildings saying that. a force had been formed to go around the county to inspect all houses.

This is the third house to collapse in Kiambu County.

Two months ago, 5 people perished in Kirigiti and other 5 were injured after he house collapsed.

Another building in Ruaka collapsed. A couple died.

The County Government has blamed the collapse on poor workmanship.
